This past weekend we went on a trip to Western Denmark. Each program had a different itinerary, and my media program got to see various journalism schools, and newspaper companies, and we got to watch a live broadcast of one of the 2 news stations here in Denmark. It was pretty cool to have access to the institutions that we were shown. We got to hear lectures from media professionals, and the themes were pretty constant.. the newspaper is dying even in Denmark, but it will not die altogether. Instead the newspaper will become a niche market for well educated, rich people who want to be well informed and have a tangible object in their hand.
On the trip we stayed in hostels, that were actually very nice. In addition to the media institutions we also got to see Hans Christian Anderson's hometown (which was very cute) and some other cultural visits including a modern museum of art. In H.C.'s hometown I bought a very cute print of "The Ugly Duckling" that I will hang in my child's nursery (ha).
On the trip we ate pretty well, although the first lunch was a bit of a surprise. We were given a huge piece of fried fish, which I immediately bit into. Unfortunately it was not boneless.. not even close... so I had a mouthful of bones. I think it was a cruel joke to play on the American students, eventually though we did get the hang of the fish. On the second night we had a very nice dinner at a place called the Ugly Duckling, which was a Danish buffet.
Even though the accommodations and food were very nice, I was actually homesick for my friends at my hojskole, because all of us had to be split up since we traveled with our different programs. We have become a really close knit group, so it wasn't easy to open up and meet new people, especially since a lot of them were the kind of people I had worked hard to avoid (the kind whose parents have ridiculous amounts of money). Our reunion was very joyful, we clearly all missed each other a lot.
It's kind of late so I am going to bed... hopefully I can post more soon.
